This title is published as a two volume set and contains articles on the History of Indians of Georgia, Tribes, Biographies of noteworthy Indians, Customs and Ways, and Treaties. The set is illustrated and contains maps.
November is National American Indian Heritage Month and students, teachers and the public will be searching for information on the Indians of Georgia.
During the course of the Great Depression, over six thousand writers were hired by the Works Progress Administration to create a series of state travel guidebooks known as the American Guide Series. Produced between 1935 and 1943, these collections documented the history of a state, along with cultural, political, and social information on its 1930’s conditions, thereby providing today’s researchers and historians with an invaluable source of primary historical information not found elsewhere. Georgia: A Guide to its Towns and Countryside includes maps, photographs, and essays that cover this unique period in American history, and is a wonderful addition to any collection of state history materials.

Between 1936 and 1938, the Works Progress Administration utilized the Federal Writers’ Project to collect the oral histories of approximately two thousand former slaves in seventeen states across the nation. Though not completely representative of the slavery experience, the Georgia Slave Narrative provides insight into the social structure and everyday life of individuals who endured slavery and the postbellum period.
This title will be of great interest to students and teachers researching the lives of former slaves that resided in the Georgia area.
